SCOTLAND’S baby boxes are helping families struggling with financial pressure this Christmas as record numbers of requests are made.
SNP MSP Karen Adam has said that the festive period “can be very tough” for some and items in the box can help.
Based on official birth records, the number of baby boxes distributed across Scotland reached 200,000 at the end of November.
Last year, a record 98% of expectant parents requested a baby box, an increase on the figure of 85% when they were first launched in 2017.

Adam said: “This time of year is so special but it can also be very tough for those less fortunate – for many, their household budget struggles to cover the basics, let alone being able to provide their children with the joy of unwrapping an exciting gift.
“Many of the actions the SNP have taken are making a real difference to children and families on low incomes – from the game-changing Scottish Child Payment to the baby box.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the Scottish Child Payment is already helping thousands of families across Scotland and doubling the payment to £20 a week will be a lifeline for many and will help towards meeting Scotland’s hugely important child poverty targets
“The baby box is also making a big difference by providing families with essential items for themselves and their little ones which hopefully lessens some of the pressure on them. It was only a matter of weeks ago we saw the brilliant news that more than 200,000 families across Scotland have now received a baby box.
“Whilst the SNP continue to deliver policies for a fairer Scotland, tackling inequality and improving the people’s lives, we are faced with a Tory government at Westminster who are making political choices that are exacerbating poverty and inequality with their austerity agenda.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
