LOCALS in one Scottish town were left more than a little confused after an emu was spotted wandering the streets.

The large bird - which is native to the Australian continent - was spotted walking down the middle of the road - and seemed unphased by the traffic.

TikTok user Fraser Ballantyne (@frazmataz15) posted a video to their page.

In it, one observer can be heard saying that they “think [the bird] is a little bit bigger than a duck”.

Resharing the video to the Scotland page on Reddit, user Fike88 commented: “Ma pal’s wee boy thought it was a duck haha.”

The bird was also spotted by Twitter user @Smallgingergirl, who shared a photo of it looking into a bin next to a bus stop in the West Lothian town.

She wrote: “Living in Livingston you get used to seeing some strange things, an ostrich raiding the bin however is a new one.”

“Or an emu,” she later added.

Users on Twitter were able to identify the big bird - who is apparently called Shirley and lives at HOPE Farm Scotland, just off the A89.

The farm posted a photo of “the famous Shirley” to its Facebook in February, and has been approached for further comment.

The SSPCA said the incident had been reported to them, but that the owner was able to get to the emu before they attended.

It's not the first time an emu has been on the lam in Scotland, after one escaped from a petting zoo session in 2019.
