MORE than 100 Scotrail services have been cancelled in a single day amid a rise in Covid cases.

Trains across Scotland were affected, including services in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayr, Arbroath, Dalmuir and Glenrothes.

FirstBus and Avanti West Coast services have also been affected by surging coronavirus cases.

Some 118 trains were called off on Monday morning, with the reason for the vast majority of cancellations pinned on staff illness.

The rail operator said it was seeing more and more staff having to self-isolate due to coronavirus.

Travellers are advised to check their journeys beforehand to avoid any cancellations and delays.

On Monday, ScotRail tweeted: "We're seeing an increase in the number of our staff having to self-isolate due to Covid-19.

"Customers planning on travelling today should check their journeys beforehand on our app or website."

ScotRail also said it would be drawing up revised timetables and planning ahead for an expected rise in Covid cases.

It said like other businesses, ScotRail is not immune to the impacts of Covid.

Other services, as well as attractions and theatre shows, have been hit hard due to rising cases.

A number of popular artists have recently called off concerts in Scotland amid the threat of Omicron.

David Ross, ScotRail's communications director, said: "We're sorry to our customers who are being inconvenienced as a result of an increase in the number of our staff self-isolating due to Covid."

Bus services have also experienced disruption due to rising cases.

A First Bus spokesperson said: "We can confirm that we're experiencing some disruption to our services as a result of an increase in the volume of our drivers having to self-isolate in line with Covid procedures.

"We're doing absolutely everything possible to make sure that we're running as many journeys as we can for our customers in very challenging circumstances."

Avanti West Coast trains were also affected by short-notice cancellations due to the impact of Covid on train crew availability.
