THE “forgotten” earnings of Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross have now been published, including a 1.5-hour refereeing job which netted him nearly £2000.

Ross is also recorded as working around 160 hours a month as an MSP – the equivalent of a full-time working week – despite also holding jobs as an MP and a football official.

The Tory MSP came under fire last week after it emerged he had failed to declare his MSP salary and earnings for 16 games as an assistant football referee in the register of interests at Westminster.

He referred himself to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner and apologised saying it was a “bad error” and that he did not know why it had happened.

Last Saturday, when the story first emerged, he also said: “I noticed the mistake myself last week. I got in touch with the parliamentary authorities. I worked with them to get the register up to date.”.

However, according to the records, the earnings for 16 football matches were registered just the day before, on November 12.

His earnings as a member for the Scottish Parliament – for which he receives a partial annual salary of £21,490 – were not registered until Monday, November 15.

These include a first payment of £1444.22 on May 27, 2021, followed by five payments in each subsequent month of £1790.83 up until October. Each one is listed as being donated to charity and for “approx 160 hours”.

There is no set amount of hours an MP has to work, but past studies have found a typical week might be between 60-70 hours.

The updated payments from the Scottish Football Association for being an assistant referee include five matches in November last year, three in December and seven in January this year. He also received £1997.57 in November from Uefa for officiating at the SK Slavia Praha v Bayer Leverkusen match, which is stated as being for 1.5 hours of work.

In 2017, Ross came under fire for missing a Westminster debate on Universal Credit to work as an assistant referee at the Barcelona v Olympiakos game in Spain.

Last year he apologised after missing a VJ Day event in his Moray constituency to work as a linesman.

A spokesman for the SNP said: “No amount of last-minute scurrying around to correct the record will detract from the fact that Douglas Ross held his constituents in contempt by forgetting to declare £30,000 of earnings.

“Ultimately, Douglas Ross thought the rules applied to everyone else but him. He is no different to his Westminster bosses who think the standards in public office do not apply to them.

“Douglas Ross will continue to miss key votes whilst cashing in – meanwhile his constituents face immorally punitive sanctions under a broken Westminster welfare system that he supports.”

The second jobs of MPs have been under scrutiny after the scandal over former Tory minister Owen Paterson, who was found to have broken lobbying rules.

Asked last week about how damaging the situation is for the Conservative Party, Ross said: “It’s all damaging, of course it is. It erodes the trust between the people who elect us and politicians.

“This has been an extremely difficult period for Parliament, for the Conservative Party and for politics in general and that’s why I’m so disappointed that my own error has brought myself into this.”

The Scottish Conservatives did not respond to a request asking to clarify how many hours Ross is working as an MSP and exactly when he contacted parliamentary authorities.
