SCOTLAND’S First Minister has said it was a “pleasure” to meet with Nancy Pelosi and other representatives from the United States Congressional delegation at COP26 this afternoon.

Nicola Sturgeon shared talks with Speaker of the House Pelosi, who is leading a team of 20 members of the House – including popular congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th district.

According to the Scottish Government, Sturgeon welcomed Pelosi and the other members to COP26.

“They discussed the strong ties of friendship between Scotland and the US, and how we can work together to achieve the Paris Agreement goals and gender equality in climate change,” it said.

Afterwards, Sturgeon added that it had been a “good discussion” on the friendship between the countries plus their shared responsibility to address the climate emergency.

Scotland’s First Minister also took the opportunity to present a gift to Ocasio-Cortez, who took to Instagram earlier today asking where she could find Irn-Bru while in Glasgow for the UN climate talks.

Sturgeon shared a photo of herself presenting the Democrat with a can of Scotland’s favourite fizzy drink, and said she was “pleased to also report that AOC now had a supply of Irn-Bru”.

Ocasio-Cortez said the exchange was an example of “Scottish hospitality” and added: “Thank you for the (very special) delivery, Madam First Minister @NicolaSturgeon - and for taking the time to speak with us today.”

The First Minister has met many senior politicians from around the world during the two-week UN event in Glasgow, including Joe Biden, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau.

Biden, meanwhile, met EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in Washington DC.

The pair sent a warning to the UK Government over the ongoing row about the Northern Ireland Protocol.

"We share the assessment that it is important for peace and stability on the island of Ireland to keep the withdrawal agreement & to keep the protocol," von der Leyen said.
