ALEXANDRIA Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi are in Glasgow for COP26 as part of a congressional delegation trip.

Speaker of the House Pelosi is leading a group of around 20 members, including well-known congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, who have travelled to Scotland for the climate summit.

Today Pelosi will speak alongside First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at an event at the summit focused on climate change and gender equality.

Sturgeon has previously praised congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, defending the politician as she faced criticism in the US for her progressive views.

“It’s amazing how threatened some people are by clever young women,” the First Minister wrote at the time. “AOC has only just been elected and this article suggests that some in her party are already planning to oust her, just because she’s rocking the boat. More power to her.”

It is not yet known whether the First Minister will be meeting with the Bronx and Queens representative.

Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram to detail her journey to Scotland from Washington, sharing a story with a small Saltire and promising to take her millions of followers behind the scenes of her journey.

“I was still a waitress just three years ago,” she recalled. “So I still have moments in my life where it hits me that I’m actually in Congress.”

Over footage of her plane taking off for Scotland, she added: “This was one of those moments.”

Before leaving DC for the trip, Pelosi explained the delegation would spends their time in Glasgow participating in bilateral meetings, panel discussions and other engagements with global leaders on climate priorities.

“The climate crisis is the existential threat of our time, and America must continue to bring our boldest ambitions to the table to meet and beat our climate action goals,” said the Speaker.

“Together with this outstanding, experienced and diverse delegation including committee chairs, members of the House Select Committee on Climate Crisis and respected members of Congress, I am honoured to once again return to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to convey the strong commitment of the US Congress in addressing this crisis and doing so in a way that puts justice and equity – particularly for indigenous communities – first.”

Meanwhile today, Ocasio-Cortez hit out at Republican congressman Paul Gosar who shared an anime video depicting the killing of a monster edited to have her face.

The congresswoman responded to the 92-second clip: “So while I was en route to Glasgow, a creepy member I work with who fundraises for Neo-Nazi groups shared a fantasy video of him killing me. And he’ll face no consequences bc @GOPLeader cheers him on with excuses. Fun Monday! Well, back to work bc institutions don’t protect woc [women of colour].”

The tweet has not been deleted but now features a small notice explaining it “violated the .. rules about hateful conduct”.

“However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the tweet to remain accessible,” it added.
