THE mayor of Los Angeles has tested positive for Covid-19 just a day after having a face-to-face meeting with Nicola Sturgeon in Glasgow.

The First Minister met with Eric Garcetti for a "brief meeting" on Tuesday at the historic COP26 climate summit.

Currently, Sturgeon has not been identified as a close contact and is expected to perform her duties as normal.

A spokesperson for the First Minister said she is taking regular Covid-19 tests and is following all applicable protocols.

It has not been confirmed whether Sturgeon shook hands or was wearing a face mask when meeting the US politician.

Garcetti confirmed he had the virus in a tweet, adding that he is now self-isolating in his hotel room.

It comes after he attended an event with world leaders for a breakfast summit in Glasgow.

Boris Johnson was among those have made a brief appearance at the event on Tuesday in the blue zone at COP26.

But the UK Government has refused to share any details on whether the Prime Minister met the mayor or if he is self-isolating as a result.

Scottish First Minister Sturgeon and her Welsh counterpart Mark Drakeford hosted the event along with Northern Ireland’s first minister Paul Givan and deputy first minister Michelle O’Neill.

A tweet from the LA mayor's official account said: "Mayor Garcetti tested positive for Covid-19 earlier today.

"He is feeling good and isolating in his hotel room. He is fully vaccinated."

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken also met Garcetti during his trip.

A spokesperson for the local authority leader said: “Councillor Aitken was delighted to welcome Mayor Garcetti to Glasgow on Monday and wishes him a speedy recovery.

“She has not been identified as a close contact but, out of an abundance of caution, has booked a PCR test and will isolate at home until she receives a result.”

Garcetti was also pictured with London Mayor Sadiq Kham at Euston Station before boarding a train to Glasgow on Monday.

A COP26 spokesperson said: "Everyone's safety and security at COP26 is of the utmost importance - we have worked closely with public health authorities to put rigorous Covid mitigation measures in place.

"Delegates are required to take daily lateral flow tests before gaining entrance to the venue.

"Anyone who develops symptoms, or receives a positive test, must self-isolate immediately and we have systems in place to support this."
