NOMINATIONS for this year’s Bafta Scotland have been announced, with Ben Sharrock’s drama Limbo leading the shortlist.
The comedy-drama about a group of asylum seekers living on a Scottish island is up for five awards, including best feature film.
Sharrock has been nominated for best director and best writer, while actors Vikash Bhai and Amir El-Masry also made the shortlist.
BBC drama Line of Duty picked up three nominations, including Audience Award Nominations for Martin Compston and Kelly Macdonald, while Jack Lowden (below) was shortlisted for his role in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe.
For the second year running, Bafta Scotland is running the Audience Award – giving members of the public an opportunity to vote for their favourite Scot on screen over the last 12 months.
David Carlyle of It’s A Sin, Lawrence Chaney of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and Jean Johansson of A Place in the Sun join Macdonald and Tennant (Des) on the shortlist. Viewers can cast their vote now on the Bafta Scotland website.
This year’s ceremony will take place digitally with a socially distant, closed-studio show hosted from BBC Pacific Quay. Edith Bowman and Sanjeev Kohli will host the ceremony alongside other guest presenters on November 20, with a highlights show to take place on BBC Scotland at 10pm.
Jude MacLaverty, director of Bafta Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to be announcing the nominations for this year’s Bafta Scotland Awards, which yet again highlight the phenomenal level of talent and creativity in the film, game and television industries within Scotland.
“This year has continued to be an extremely challenging one for many, and throughout it, the film, gaming and TV industries have continued to inform and entertain us all with a wealth of quality programming, innovative games and important films, which is reflected in our list of talented nominees who we are very much looking forward to celebrating on 20 November.”
Bowman added: “I am genuinely honoured and thrilled to be returning to host the BAFTA Scotland Awards again this year. What a list of nominees! I am so proud of all the incredible work and wealth of creative talent and craft that exists in Scotland, I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone on 20 November.”

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
