MSPS from across party lines have come together to support a group of residents’ fight against plans for an industrial estate close to family homes and gardens.

Representatives from the Greens, SNP and Labour came together with residents of the Oval estate in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, after they voiced concerns over the planning application.

The application puts forward proposals for two industrial warehouses, an HGV access road and employee car park as close to two metres away from family dwellings. A date has yet to be set for the planning sub-committee to vote on the proposals.

Gillian Mackay (above, left), Green MSP, said the work in Lanarkshire shows politicians can “put differences aside and work together to create a fairer, greener, society”.

“This is a great example of where we can find common ground and I was delighted to be joined at the site last week by Stephanie Callaghan MSP and Steven Bonnar MP, and also to have received confirmation from Monica Lennon MSP that she is fully supports the residents in their campaign to have this application refused,” the Central Scotland MSP explained.

“This proposal should be rejected on a number of key issues, from the noise impact on residential amenity to the damage to natural environment, removal of green space and much more.

“I would call on all residents to email their councillors and urge them to reject this proposal.”

Richard Kerr, a spokesperson for the group of local residents, said they felt like they were being “run roughshod over” by developers and the council.
