SCOTLAND has recorded almost 4000 new coronavirus cases in the latest 24-hour period.

A total of 3893 infections were registered, with a positivity rate of 14.1% – up from 13.5% on Sunday.

The Scottish Government noted, however, that a larger proportion than normal of the specimens reported were processed more than 48 hours ago.

The latest figure is a significant decrease on Sunday’s record-breaking total of 7113, though that was also affected by the 48-hour backlog.

No further deaths have been recorded among people who tested positive over the past 28 days – although Monday's figures are often low as registry offices are closed at the weekend. The death toll under this measure therefore remains 8111.

Separate figures produced by National Records of Scotland, which report deaths where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate, put the number at 10,505 as of 22 August.

Some 551 people were in hospital on Sunday with recently confirmed Covid-19, an increase of 44. That is the highest total since early March.

Of those, 52 were in intensive care – no change in 24 hours.

A total of 4,103,687 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,668,041 have received their second.
