SCOTLAND’S wealthiest MSP has updated his register of interests, revealing that he expects to receive more than £200,000 from his businesses this year in addition to his Holyrood salary.

Alexander Burnett, who retook Aberdeenshire West for the Scottish Conservatives in May, has considerable land and property holdings worth an estimated £44 million.

He was found to have breached the code of conduct and was reprimanded in 2017 for failing to declare his interests when lodging questions.

The aristocrat was admonished by the Scottish Parliament’s standards committee but it said it did not consider the breach severe enough to justify a further sanction.

Ahead of MSPs returning to Holyrood after the recess, Burnett updated his register – revealing that he expects to receive an income this year of up to £25,000 from one of his enterprises and up to £180,000 from another. The outside income is in addition to the salary of £64,470 he receives as an MSP.

His register states: “I am a director of Bancon Developments Holdings Limited, a company concerned with the building, contracting, dealing, developing and managing of property. I expect to receive remuneration in the range of £20,001 to £25,000 for the year ended March 31, 2022.”

It adds: “I own and am a sole trader of AJA Burnett Estate, a property leasing and forestry undertaking managed by Leys Estate Group, Banchory Business Centre, Burn O’Bennie Road, Banchory, AB31 5ZU.

“The level of profits and losses fluctuates. I anticipate to withdraw between £170,001 and £180,000 in 2021/22. I expect to spend between zero and one day per month on this role.”

His register also sets out the value of his property holdings run by a number of trusts.

It states: “I am a trustee and potential beneficiary of the Fordie Trust. The Trust owns property in Aberdeenshire with a market value of between £5,400,001 and £5,500,000. The Property generates a gross annual income of between £70,001 and £80,000. I do not expect to receive any income from the Fordie Trust this session.

“I am a trustee and sole beneficiary of the Banchory Trust. The Trust owns property in Aberdeenshire with a market value of between £15,200,001 and £15,300,000. The Property generates a gross annual income of between £370,001 and £380,000. I do not expect to receive any income from the Banchory Trust this session.”

It continues: “I own AJA Burnett Estate in Aberdeenshire which encompasses agricultural land, residential and commercial lettings... arts, sporting and forestry interests. The market value of the Property is in the range £13,500,001-£14,000,000. The Property generates a gross annual income of between £570,001 and £580,000.”

MSPs must provide details of their financial interests making a statement on becoming or being returned as an MSP. Burnett updated his statement on June 11, 2021. His wealth is in contrast to some MSP experiences – the SNP’s Emma Roddick and Labour’s Paul Sweeney have written about previously being on Universal Credit.
