NICOLA Sturgeon has written to members of the SNP asking them to back their co-operation agreement with the Scottish Greens in a consultative ballot.

Details of the proposed deal between the two parties were set out last week and approved by the Cabinet – but Greens members are still to vote on whether they approve of the plan.

After the draft deal between the pro-independence parties was endorsed by the SNP’s National Executive Committee, Sturgeon said a consultative ballot of members would be held online in the coming week.

In an email to members this morning, the SNP leader explained that polls would be opening at 10am with voting carried out through the Mi-Voice service.

Sturgeon wrote that she is asking all members to “vote Yes” to the proposed deal, which would see two Green MSPs given ministerial positions.

“You’ll be helping me cement the pro-independence majority in Holyrood,” she explained.

“With your support, both parties will work together to accelerate progress towards independence, address the climate emergency, tackle child poverty, and reform public services.

The National:

“The agreement is about doing politics and governance better. The SNP is ready to get down to work to tackle the major challenges we face as a country.”

The deal would see the SNP and Greens agree to a shared draft policy programme, with a focus on securing indyref2 and building a green economic recovery from Covid.

Greens members will vote on the deal at an emergency meeting on Saturday.
