BAKERY chain Greggs has become the latest firm to be affected by Brexit-fuelled supply chain problems.

PoliticsHome reports that the Newcastle-based bakers joins McDonald’s, Nando’s and various supermarkets in struggling to bring in certain supplies.

The crisis is largely down to a severe shortage of lorry drivers and other labour workers, which has been linked to post-Brexit immigration rule changes.

Greggs’s particularly challenge is seeing them struggle to bring in its chicken-based products, like chicken bakes, it was reported.

The business sells a number of chicken-heavy options including wraps, sandwiches and bakes.

The bakery stressed that it is a limited number of items affected by the ongoing problems.

After Nando’s shut nearly 50 restaurants due to chicken shortages, sandwich chain Subway said it has seen “minor supply chain shortages”.

Yesterday McDonald’s confirmed it had no more milkshakes due to the issues, while Iceland’s managing director Richard Walker said today that he fears Christmas could be cancelled as problems continue.

The National:

This morning the boss of one of the UK’s biggest retailers has warned that current food shortages are at a “worse level” than he has ever seen.

Steve Murrells, chief executive of the Co-operative Group, said the retailer has significantly reduced its range of some products to help serve customers.

Murrells said the disruption to supply has been driven by “Brexit and issues caused by Covid”, and the firm is retraining staff as lorry drivers to help fill vacant roles.
