ITALIANS are continuing to show their love for The National's Braveheart front page as the award-nominated cover has now been found printed onto a T-shirt in an Italian sports shop.

The tee shows off The National's now-famous front page of Roberto Mancini as William Wallace ahead of Italy’s match against England in the Euro 2020.

The front page from Saturday, July 10, featured the Italy manager as Mel Gibson’s version of William Wallace, and read: “Save us Roberto, you’re our final hope.”

The National:

Text underneath stated: “We can’t take another 55 years of them banging on about this.”

The Azzurri came away winners and lifted the trophy after defeating Gareth Southgate's men on penalties.

While the front page made headlines and sparked debate across the UK, it was loved in Italy, being widely shared across the country's media.

It was even popular with Mancini himself, who said: "The front page of the newspaper is nice.

"We'll have to play our game. We'll have to have a great match, this must be our only thought. It's a football match after all."

He later added that it "did make me chuckle".

Our newspaper then found its way to the Italian manager as a video posted by the Italian team showed The National sitting under the Euro 2020 trophy on the side's flight home.

But now it has been was spotted by a Scot who lives in Italy while visiting a shop in Calabria and was shared online. The tweet was positively received with some saying they wanted their own National T-shirt.

Dionne Kennedy, who shared the picture on Twitter, explained that it was actually her mum who had found the item on display in Italy.

"She actually lives there, she is on holiday in the south in a place called Calabria. She just spotted that this morning, snapped a wee picture and sent me a text," Kennedy said.

"I thought it was funny, sent it to a few pals, put it on Twitter and obviously thought someone is going to find this funny on Twitter so that was it really."

Kennedy, a 27-year-old from Glasgow who now works in Berlin in digital marketing, said The National's front page had gone pretty far in Italy, adding, "it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't the only shop that [sold the T-shirt]".

"It hit the news over there but I think this is the first time [my mum] has seen it printed on a T-shirt," she said.

While Kennedy enjoyed seeing the T-shirt on sale in Italy, she said The National may be missing a trick.

She said: "Quite a lot of people in the comments said they wanted one so either you guys need to start printing them or maybe my mum has got to start some sort of business out of Italy."
