BORIS Johnson has full confidence in Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Downing Street has said.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said there were no imminent plans for a Cabinet reshuffle.

Weekend news reports suggested Johnson had threatened to demote Sunak to health secretary amid anger over Government leaks.

The spokesman said: “The Prime Minister and the Chancellor have always enjoyed a close and effective working relationship, and will continue to do so.

“I think you can see, particularly during the pandemic, they have worked closely together.

“They have been in lockstep throughout this incredibly challenging period for the country.

“There no plans for any reshuffle.”

It was reported that the incident occurred after Sunak called for the easing of travel restrictions in a leaked letter. Details were published in the Sunday Times ahead of an announcement due on Wednesday, causing the Prime Minister to become frustrated.

During an open meeting, Johnson was reported to have said: “I've been thinking about it. Maybe it's time we looked at Rishi as the next secretary of state for health. He could potentially do a very good job there.”

However the newspaper noted that Johnson is not expected to carry out the threat.

A source at the Treasury said: “The Chancellor is solely focused on securing the country’s economic recovery and continuing to protect and create jobs.”

Meanwhile, it was also reported that Johnson is considering moving Michael Gove from the Cabinet Office to the Home Office amid frustration over Priti Patel’s performance in her role. Number 10 refused to comment on the “reshuffle speculation”.
