Patrick Swayze: The Demons & the Dance (C5, 8.30pm)
ALTHOUGH it is almost 12 years since Patrick Swayze passed away, aged just 57, the public’s adoration for the actor and fascination with his life and career have clearly not faded.
Tonight, Channel 5 is dedicating another evening to the Texas-born star. In The Demons & the Dance, we explore Swayze’s private struggles and public successes. His first girlfriend, Nikki D’Amico, and childhood friend and choreographer Rick Odums chart his remarkable upbringing in Texas, while his first manager Kate Edwards and casting director Jane Jenkins chart his rapid rise in Hollywood.
Producer Linda Gottlieb and actor Lonny Price reveal the behind-the-scenes story of classic film Dirty Dancing, and Ghost director Jerry Zucker tells how he was turned into a Swayze superfan. We also hear how he sought solace in alcohol, before ultimately finding peace in his 50s.
Take Off with Bradley & Holly (BBC1, 6pm)
DESPITE Bradley Walsh’s stint on Doctor Who, there’s still something slightly strange about seeing him and Holly Willoughby hosting a game show on BBC1, mainly because the pair are such ITV stalwarts.
But so long as you’re not wondering when the adverts are coming, there’s still plenty to enjoy in their new show, which sees them offer members of the audience the chance to win seats on a plane jetting off on the holiday of a lifetime – not least the idea that foreign travel is a possibility again. This week, the destination is St Lucia.
A Lake District Farm Shop (C4, 8pm)
IN the final part of this lovely series, the lady of a Cumbrian manor reveals a book filled with incredible marmalade recipes that could be used as the key ingredient in a new cake to be sold at Tebay Service Station. Master butcher Dave, keen to use every part of the animals they raise, turns to an age-old skill to transform sheepskins into new products for the farm shop.
And there’s a festive feeling in the air as design team, brother and sister Lucien and Helena, lead the transformation from farm shop to winter wonderland in preparation for Christmas.
Rolling Stones: Rock ’n’ Roll Circus (Sky Arts, 9pm)
A RARE chance to see footage from the star-studded 1968 concert performed in a Wembley TV studio that was turned into a circus for the occasion – complete with clowns, fire-eaters and trapeze artists.
The show features songs by The Who, Marianne Faithfull, Taj Mahal and Jethro Tull alongside actual circus performers and impromptu supergroup the Dirty Mac, comprising John Lennon, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, Ivry Gitlis and Yoko Ono.
The Stones appear for the second half of the concert, performing hits such Jumpin’ Jack Flash, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Sympathy for the Devil.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
