THE National and Sunday National are thrilled to announce we have been nominated four times at this year's Scottish Press Awards.
Our Sunday National's "Legends" cover is up for Front Page of the Year.
The cover captures the momentous occasion when Scotland's 23-year absence from a major men's tournament was ended after the team beat Serbia on penalties.
Our journalist Kirsteen Paterson is also nominated in the Local Weekly Feature Writer of the Year category for her outstanding work in the Sunday National.
Meanwhile, both Shona Craven and Paterson are up for the Nicola Barry Award.
The category is open to all women journalists of any age working in print and online media in Scotland deserving of recognition for their work in issue-led reportage or commentary.
The National's editor Callum Baird said: "It’s always fantastic to see the great work of our journalists being recognised – and I know in the case of all these nominations it’s more than deserved.
“It’s exciting to see both Shona and Kirsteen up for the Nicola Barry award. Sunday National and Ferret journalist Karin Goodwin picked up that prize in 2019, so we’re hoping to see another success.
“Kirsteen is also up for a writer of the year award and we’re all wishing her the best of luck in that.
“Our ‘Legends’ front-page for the Sunday National, edited by Roxanne Sorooshian, celebrated the fantastic achievements of Scotland’s men’s football team.

“Hopefully at next year’s awards we’ll see our front-page celebrating the fantastic achievements of Italy’s men’s football team.
“And thanks to our readers and subscribers for their support. We’re proud to be Scotland’s only pro-independence paper and strive to deliver you news of the highest quality.”
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on September 29, to be hosted by former BBC Scotland newsreader Jackie Bird.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
