BORIS Johnson struggled against audio issues as he appeared at Prime Minister’s Questions digitally during his self-isolation.

The Tory leader is isolating at Chequers after being identified as a close contact of Sajid Javid, who has tested positive for Covid-19.

Initially Johnson said he and Chancellor Rishi Sunak would not have to self-isolate as they were taking part in a pilot scheme involving daily testing, but they U-turned without a couple of hours after a furious backlash from the public.

Appearing via Zoom again had its challenges for the Prime Minister as he struggled to communicate with Speaker Lindsay Hoyle.

And the Speaker also gave Tory MP Jonathan Gullis a strong telling off as things became chaotic at the final PMQs before recess.

Gullis had tapped his watch during Labour leader Keir Starmer’s questioning, prompting an angry Hoyle to respond: "I don't need any help or assistance from yourself. The next time you point at your watch, might be better you're looking at Big Ben outside rather than here."

And shortly after that the technical issues started. As Johnson gave his usual rebuttal to Starmer, Hoyle cut him off.

“Sorry Prime Minister, we’re really struggling on the sound level. I don’t know whether we can actually have the sound level turned up to hear the Prime Minister?”

He apologised before asking if he should try again. There was a long pause before Johnson could be heard saying: “Hang on a minute, is it this thing here?”

Hoyle responded to say despite the rowdy Chamber he could hear him better – but Johnson asked again if he could be heard before another pause.

“We can hear you loud and clear,” Hoyle reassured him finally before asking him not to repeat his response to Starmer in full.
