The National:

HAVING failed dismally in her effort to challenge the SNP’s electoral dominance in Scotland, Ruth Davidson has embarked on her latest political venture.

The former Scottish Tory leader is trying to reform the archaic House of Lords – by becoming a fully fledged member of the House of Lords.

Ruth shall now be known as Baroness Davidson of Lundin Links, having sworn allegiance to the Queen in the formal Westminster ceremony.

She has dedicated herself to “"reforming the House of Lords into a democratic chamber", but not everyone sees it that way.

The former MSP’s official introduction to the Lords did not go down to well on social media.

As you’d expect, the SNP, who do not send members to the Lords, stuck the boot in.

“Utterly absurd,” SNP MP Stewart McDonald tweeted.

The National:

Colleague Stephen Flynn added: “And just like that another Tory from Scotland scuttles away from democratic accountability, for life.”

Members of the public were also appalled.

One commented: “We have the gall to lecture other countries on 'democracy' when we have this?

“This is not cause for celebration. Nothing was earned here. Nothing is gained with yet one more freeloader collecting their £350pd when too many people live on much less.”

Alex Leggate replied: “Congratulations to Ruth Davidson on her election to the House of Lords. I'm sure everyone who voted for her to be here is delighted.

“Meanwhile, shame on the EU and their ‘unelected decision-makers’, eh?”

Sean added: “Congratulations @RuthDavidsonPC, you've officially become a legislator-for-life with absolutely no democratic accountability. You are a disgrace.”

Dick Winchester posted: “Another demonstration of the rapidly widening political and social divide between the countries of the UK.”

Other Twitter users made light of the situation.

Fearghas Kelly wrote: “The inevitable leader of Better Together 2 being called the ‘Baroness of Lundin Links’ is like some kind of cursed reverse nominative determinism, we need to find someone called Holly Ruud-O’Tonomy to take her on.”

Another added: “Pantomime season is normally December!”

Good luck reforming the House of Lords, Baroness, we’ll take our chances as an independent nation thanks.
