A BBC radio station went off air as the channel suffered "temporary technical difficulties" this morning.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Chiles on Friday programme, usually broadcast from 10am to 12pm, with Krishnan Guru-Murthy sitting in for host Adrian Chiles.

Listeners were met with some extended theme music along with the repeated message: "We're sorry, but BBC Radio 5 Live is currently experiencing temporary technical difficulties. We hope to return to normal programming as soon as possible."

As the programme was supposed to start at 10am, Guru-Murthy tweeted: "Waiting for the show on #BBC5Live? Me too! A fire alarm at the BBC in Salford has momentarily taken us down…..we will be back when we can!"

The show returned at 10.15am after playing a previously broadcast interview to account for the delayed start.

Acknowledging the delay, Guru-Murthy jokingly said he "broke the BBC".

He said: "You will notice we're a little bit later than normal. I broke the BBC. Just coming in on an odd day, just to fill in for Adrian on a Friday and the whole thing just collapsed.

"What actually happened was there was a fire alarm at the BBC in Salford and everybody had to leave the business. So it took us off air sort of for a few minutes."

The show appears to be back to normal now.
