NOT from England but had to watch major tournament football on a London-based TV channel?
You’ll know that it’s not always the most pleasant of experiences.
Whether it’s constant references to 1966 or the commentators forgetting you exist, you could be forgiven for reaching for the mute button.
But not everyone sees it that way.
Take Tory MP John Redwood, for example, who thinks it’s England that really have it tough.
He tweeted: “Brilliant England win. Great for the UK. Great for the most ignored and understated country in our Union.
“Even the BBC has to mention England today.”

After scraping your jaw from the floor, it’s tough to know where to start with that one.
Obviously Redwood isn’t familiar with Scotland being dragged out of the EU against its will, or the Northern Ireland Protocol, or Welsh history over the past 400 years.
That’s especially embarrassing considering Redwood was formerly secretary of state for Wales. Oops.
It also seems the unbelievably England-centric coverage of Euro 2020 has escaped the Tory’s attention.
Scottish football journalist Graham Ruthven quipped: “Absolutely spot on. When will the BBC mention England at Euro 2020? Scandalous how little talk there has been of it.”
Steve Madeley, a writer for The Athletic, added: “Too right. The BBC has barely mentioned England for the last 3 weeks.”
There have been plenty of high-profile penalty misses at this year’s championships, but Redwood’s tweet has got to be the worst take of the Euros.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
