NICOLA Sturgeon is set to update the nation on the pandemic as cases rise in some parts of the country.

The First Minister will head a coronavirus briefing in Edinburgh today as Scotland makes its first steps out of lockdown.

The SNP leader is expected to address the situation in Glasgow, Clackmannanshire and East Renfrewshire, where cases have been rising steeply.

Glasgow is the only council area in Scotland that remains in Level Three lockdown, while the rest of the mainland sits in Level Two.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has said that Clackmannanshire is now giving the Scottish Government “a bit of concern.”

As of yesterday, the local authority had a seven-day average rate of 139.7 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 136.8 in Glasgow City.

Scotland's island communities are currently in Level One due to the low number of cases and hospital admissions.

The briefing will begin at 12.15pm.
