DO they think we have forgotten that the Queen assented to a Brexit bill presented by a PM whose claims were being questioned in Scotland? In spite of her “subjects” in Scotland having voted two to one against Brexit. Could she not have demanded the bill be changed to allow Scotland to remain in Europe? No respect for Scottish opinion, so why should we respect the monarchy?

I have no doubt that there are a lot of people in Scotland who love the monarchy but I believe there are now many more who do not. The time is coming when this needs to be tested. In the meantime let the royals support the Union and find out how popular that is in Scotland. Did it not work for Boris in our recent Scottish election – how many directly elected MSPs did the Unionists get? The Scottish independence party, SNP got 62.
Let the Queen align herself with the Unionists. By the way, I thought she is supposed to be neutral in all of this. When independence comes the next vote should be for a republic, and I will be voting for it. Let the English keep their Queen.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
