JOANNA Cherry MP has announced her return to work.

The Edinburgh South West MP said she'd be taking time off for health reasons in March, with her constituency office team continuing to work during this period.

A day later, she made a public statement reaffirming her commit to the role amidst speculation that she'd join Alex Salmond's new Alba Party, which had launched that afternoon

At the time, Cherry told followers on Twitter: "I said I was taking some time out for health reasons. Any speculation to the contrary is incorrect. I intend to return to work as the SNP MP for Edinburgh South West when I am able."

Today she's said she's "continuing a phased return to work this week" and "looking forward to recommencing some public duties".

The announcement comes as the MSPs elected last week also prepare to begin work.

The SNP emerged as the largest party with 64 Members of the Scottish Parliament.

Congratulating them, Cherry said: "I welcome the historic fourth SNP Scottish election victory and the re-election of an enhanced pro-independence majority to the Scottish Parliament. "

She went on: "I’m looking forward to continuing to play a part in developing the strategy to secure a second independence referendum and the arguments needed to win it."
