The National:

GEORGE Galloway is the Union’s best hope. That’s what his All for Unity party would have you believe. If true, it’s very good news for Scottish independence supporters.

With the Tories reportedly worried that Galloway’s vanity project-cum-Unionist party will cause them to lose up to six seats in parliament to “nationalists”, some in the pro-independence movement will be rooting for him.

And so it’s a bittersweet taste that’s left in the mouth having to watch him crash and burn on the BBC.

A clip of the interview has now gone viral on social media, with countless more Scots having to watch the former Labour politician on the BBC’s The Nine.

What starts with a Freudian slip - Galloway asking: “Why is it all about me?” when questioned on his desire to remain in the spotlight - soon descends into farce.

The host quizzes the wannabe MSP on his political convictions, citing the “peculiar political journey”.

Not long ago Galloway said he should be shot if he was ever seen campaigning under a Union flag with a Tory, now he’s said he’s going to vote for one. Asked about this change of tune, Galloway had no choice but to try and deflect.

“My goodness you’re strangely animated for BBC Scotland,” he told host Martin Geissler.

He went on to claim Geissler had “lost his rag” and that the SNP had the BBC “in their pockets”.

Tory BBC boss Tim Davie and Tory donor BBC chairman Richard Sharp might disagree with that.

Galloway’s rant continues as he pointedly refuses to answer the question. In what can only be described as car-crash TV, he winds up by accusing the BBC host of “trying to destroy Britain”.

The All for Unity man’s been pestering the broadcasters to let him into leaders’ debates for a while now, even launching legal action against STV.

If he’s going to give performances like that, we have to question why he’s bothering.

The clip has already attracted the attention of many Scots on Twitter, with comedian Janey Godley commenting: "Meaoooow."

The SNP's Gavin Newlands said Galloway was "an embarrassment. A total caricature", while his colleague John Nicolson added: "[Geissler] deserves to have his indefatigability saluted for resisting the temptation to shriek with laughter during this oddest of odd exchanges."

The National's Gerry Hassan wrote: "George Galloway was a long time ago a firebrand left-winger. Now he is someone who shouts abuse at interviewers to avoid answering questions about why he once said he would never work with Tories and is now working with Tories."
