SCOTLAND’S first mental health service for children and young people at accident and emergency has moved to the new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP) in Edinburgh.

The service – run by 6VT Edinburgh and funded by Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity – supports under 18s presenting at A&E with a range of needs.

Following three years at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Royal Hospital for Sick Children, the youth workers will now be based in the Emergency Department of the RHCYP from 7pm to 1am on Friday and Saturday evenings.

In the last year, despite the challenges of Covid-19, the service has supported a total of 335 children and young people. Of these, the majority were supported for medical reasons or with substance misuse. Others had been victims of violence, had self-harmed, or had a range of mental health needs.
