SNP MP Joanna Cherry confirmed on Twitter this afternoon that she will be taking time off work for health reasons.

The MP for Edinburgh South West asked for her privacy to be respected as she made the announcement.

While she is off work, she said her constituency office will continue to deal with enquiries.

In a post, the QC wrote: “A wee personal announcement. I’m taking some time out for health reasons. My constituency office will continue to deal with all enquires. I hope my privacy will be respected. Thank you.”

Well wishes have flooded in for the politician following her announcement.

SNP depute leader Keith Brown tweeted: "All the best for a rapid and complete recovery Joanna."

“Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery,” wrote SNP candidate Tom Arthur.

Aileen McHarg, professor of public law and human rights at the University of Durham, added: “Best of luck dealing with whatever is wrong.”

Cherry has represented the Edinburgh South West constituency since 2015. Prior to that, she was made a QC in 2009 and was an advocate with the Arnot Manderson stable within the Faculty of Advocates.
