The National:

GEORGE Galloway has wrapped himself in various colours during his rollercoaster career in politics, but now it looks as though his attempt to use the RAF’s famous red, white and blue roundel may be backfiring on him.

In a quite ludicrous leaflet circulated to every home in the South Scotland region, Galloway and his All for Unity mates Dr Bruce Halliday and Jamie Blackett have their mugshots plastered under the party’s symbol, which is so like the RAF roundel you would need a microscope to see the difference.

The white circle is smaller than the other two while the RAF roundel has white and blue circles of the same size.

When The National revealed Galloway’s roundel trick last month, the Electoral Commission said: “At certain elections a registered emblem or party description may be used on the ballot paper.

“We do not regulate how a party wishes to brand itself when that message does not appear on ballot papers.”

All for Unity’s leaflet has one policy – stop the SNP – and claims to be cross-party, but doesn’t say which parties.

Now people associated with the RAF are taking offence at the roundel being used for political purposes.

Billy Gold of Glasgow wrote to tell us: “I am absolutely disgusted to see that George Galloway’s latest political wheeze ‘All for Unity’ is using what looks very like the famous red, white and blue roundel used by the RAF.

“My late father served in the RAF and he will be turning in his grave at the thought of this symbol being used by someone who, throughout an eminently forgettable political political career, served no-one but himself.”

The Ministry of Defence continues to look into the matter.
