THE SNP have criticised the UK Chancellor for failing to reduce VAT for the hair, beauty and holistic services sector at last week’s Budget despite calls from MPs and campaigners.

SNP shadow chancellor Alison Thewliss MP urged Rishi Sunak to explain why he ignored calls to reduce VAT to 5% , a move which would have helped many in the sector.

The hair, beauty and holistic services industry currently contributes £9.2 billion to the UK economy. However, the UK Government has not offered them any credible financial support.

Thewliss said the decision was “disappointing, but not surprising”. “Last week, Rishi Sunak had the opportunity to make amends and financially support salons who have been ignored throughout this pandemic. Sadly, he failed.”
