A MAN has been charged in connection with an alleged threat made to SNP MP Joanna Cherry.

Officers had been contacted after “threatening communications” were made online.

It followed Cherry’s sacking from the SNP’s front bench at Westminster.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said : "A 30-year-old man has been charged with a communications offence and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

The SNP MP added: “Pleased to advise that @policescotland have arrested & charged a man in relation to the threats I received on Monday night.

“I’d like to thank them for their swift action. But this is not ok. Other enquiries are ongoing.”

Cherry was dropped from her position as SNP justice and home affairs spokeswoman in a reshuffle by Ian Blackford on Monday.

Later that day the MP said she had contacted police after receiving a threat from a man.

She tweeted: “Action and inaction have consequences. Tonight I’ve received a vicious threat from a man to my personal safety.

“The matter has been reported to Police Scotland and I’m somewhere safe. Thank you for all the lovely messages of support.”

The announcement of the arrest came as another SNP MP revealed they had also been the subject of threats.

Alyn Smith has reported an email sent to him on Monday night to the police.

He told The National: "On Monday evening, my staff received a threatening email which was concerning and to merit forwarding to the police, which we did on Monday evening.

"I am fine, this is not unusual sadly, but this email was particularly threatening and I felt the need to involve the police for the protection of my team as well as myself."
