TWO musicians from Glasgow have used the coronavirus lockdowns as inspiration for their first single and EP – the former out now and the latter due out on February 12.

Glassworks is a piano/vocal duo from Glasgow, made up of long-time collaborators, vocalist Emilie Lassus Boyd and pianist Dan Brown.

Emilie Boyd and Dan Brown met in Glasgow’s contemporary jazz scene, where a mixture of influences and musical traditions have come together to produce a distinctive and captivating folk-tinged flavour of the genre, constantly propelled forward by the highly-skilled players that Glasgow’s world-class Royal Conservatoire produces.

Glassworks said: “We formed over the course of 2020, and the madness, loneliness and introspection that consumed musicians during those 12 months is echoed in our debut EP, Willow Tree.

“The songs sing of belonging, reflection, and self-realisation, with a focus on poetic storytelling, strong melodies and an improvisatory flair. Musically, they are a swirling blend of contemporary jazz, folk and indie styles, with a romantic and lyrical leaning.”

Their debut single Home is out now.

Boyd is a frontwoman for many of her own projects as well as a regular backing vocalist and collaborator.

Notable recent credits include her three-time sell-out show Like A Cat Tied to a Stick: Radiohead Re-imagined, Rebecca Vasmant’s Worldwide FM show, supporting Craig Charles at the O2 Academy with Tom McGuire & the Brassholes, and backing vocals for artists such as Rachel Sermanni, Kathryn Joseph, Adam Holmes, and Man of the Minch.

She is one third of Little Acres, a vocal harmony trio, and was nominated for Best Vocalist at the 2020 Scottish Jazz Awards.

Brown is an accomplished pianist, composer and multi-instrumentalist in high demand on the Scottish jazz scene.
