THE National wants to thank all of our supporters after we surpassed 11,000 digital subscribers.
Editor Callum Baird described the moment, coming just a few months before the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, as “really important”.
Last year with your support we made the “remarkable achievement” of 10,000 subscribers. As part of our 10,000 Steps initiative we were able to hire a video journalist, launch regular supplements and a Unionist Fact Checking service.
With Scotland’s most important election coming up, we have lots more in store and are over the moon to be getting crucial independence news out to an even bigger audience.

At our latest count we have an incredible 11,824 subscribers (including some 800 who have signed up to the print newspaper) helping to spread the truth about Scotland’s place in the Union.
Baird welcomed the news today, commenting: “People are increasingly relying on The National to find out what’s happening in the REAL Scotland.
“The milestone of 11,000 digital subscribers – before indyref2 has even properly kicked off – is really important to us. The more people who sign up to support us the more influence we can have over the next campaign.
“We have a huge new initiative kicking off next week as well, and we can’t wait to share the news with you.”
Keep your eyes open for news on that initiative – we’re very excited about it and looking forward to getting everyone involved.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
