ANOTHER 89 people have died in Scotland after contracting Covid-19, John Swinney has announced.

The deputy first minister confirmed the latest daily toll, which accounts for people who had tested positive in the previous 28 days. A total of 5468 deaths have now been recorded under that measurement.

A further 1636 cases were also recorded in the previous 24 hours, with a positivity rate of 7%.

Some 2004 people are in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19, one more than yesterday.

Of those, 161 are in intensive care, an increase of five.

A total of 510 of the new cases were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 328 were in Lanarkshire and 182 in Lothian.

The remaining cases were spread across 10 other health boards.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s briefing, Swinney said the deaths are “a stark reminder of the grief and the heartbreak the virus continues to cause”.

The latest vaccination figures show as of 8.30am, 334,871 people have received the first dose of their vaccine.

The Government says it remains on track to give the first jab to everyone over the age of 70 by mid-February.
