THE First Minister will update the public this afternoon as Scotland could see a tightening of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Currently mainland Scotland is under stay at home orders while Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles are in level 3.

The Scottish Government has been looking at how they can strengthen the lockdown restrictions already in place amid concern that the virus may still have many opportunities to spread.

Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly stressed that the public should be thinking about how they behaved during the 2020 spring lockdown as we go through the strictest rules since then.

During recent Scottish Government coronavirus briefings the First Minister has signalled that ministers are looking at restricting click and collect services in retail, as well as takeaway services from hospitality venues.

The Cabinet met yesterday morning to discuss the situation as they tried to “reduce the number of people that are moving around”.

During Monday's briefing the First Minister indicated their decisions could be revealed after the meeting, but she said yesterday that any update would come Wednesday.

Speaking on Monday Sturgeon said: “I'm not trying to shy away from saying, because I said it last week, the kind of issues we will be looking at.

“I talked last week about perhaps reducing click and collect, essential retail only, to maybe looking at further restrictions on takeaways.”

Last week John Swinney, the deputy first minister, also indicated that rules could get tighter if people do not reduce their human interaction.

The First Minister will speak before FMQs begins this afternoon at 12.20pm.
