THE National has today been featured alongside publications from around the world in a CNN article showcasing global reactions to the riots in the United States.

On January 6, Washington DC saw supporters of Donald Trump, egged on by the commander-in-chief and unfounded conspiracy theories that the presidential election had been fraudulently “stolen”, storm the Capitol.

One of the rioters was shot and killed by police as others overran the security detail and took the floor of the House. Tear gas was used in the Capitol rotunda, the symbolic heart of US democracy, and an explosive device found at the nearby Republican National Committee headquarters.

Lawmakers had been inside the Capitol counting the electoral college votes and preparing to officially declare Joe Biden the president-elect when the rioters broke in. Elected officials were told to hide and remain silent by police, while other buildings nearby were evacuated.

Carrying the story on our front page today, The National wrote: “Capitol chaos” accompanied by pictures of the crowds both inside and outside of the Washington DC building. We also featured special columns by both Leslie Riddoch and David Pratt on the situation in the US.

That page was featured in a CNN article showing how Scotland had reported on the democratic crisis.

Callum Baird, The National’s editor, said: "It's amazing to see The National representing Scotland on the world stage, right as support for Scottish independence is at its highest ever level in the polls.

"This shows Scotland is seen as a distinct nation on a global level - it's time for us to leave the Union and represent ourselves 100%."
