BORIS Johnson is ecstatic in his breathless delivery that the land will prosper “mightily” after a No Deal.

One has suspicions that the jingoistic Land of Hope and Glory has infiltrated his hard-wiring. In the latter song of Empire, he seems still to hope, or is it even belief, that “God who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!” There it is, the subconscious “mightier”. Whether God is at the tiller on this one is unknown – probably not.

As to the actual criteria of “mightier” – the details and outcomes by which one could assess future “might” let alone “mightier” – there are none delineated. That should come as no surprise, as Boris Johnson does not do detail and when he does, it is usually on a scale of “vagueness” to “lie”. That does not worry the second-rate members of the Cabinet; they equally operate on the same scale especially when actual numbers are required, such as lorries heid up at Dover at present.

As we move along post-Brexit, one cannot say for certain that it will be “mightily”. One can only say that it “might”.
