ANOTHER 1504 people have contracted Covid-19 in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

The sharp rise in cases, recorded in the past 24 hours, brings the total to 113,050.

The First Minister said the latest figure, up from 934 on Sunday, was thought to be linked to a processing backlog in the UK lighthouse system, though analysis was ongoing.

The daily positivity rate was 6%, up from 5.2%.

No deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours among people to have tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days. However, registration offices tend to be closed over the weekend, meaning Monday figures can be artificially low.

A total of 44 deaths were registered over the weekend, bringing the total under that measurement to 4283.

Some 1078 are in hospital with recently confirmed coronavirus, 17 more than the day previously.

Of those, 59 are in intensive care, an increase of one.

Sturgeon, speaking at the Scottish Government’s update, warned the nation’s R number – the infection rate – is is now hovering "around one", after sitting below one for a couple of weeks.
