COMEDIAN Janey Godley is set to host the virtual Big Burns Supper event featuring musicians, actors, aerialists and historians from around the world next month.

The free broadcast marks the 10th anniversary of the Big Burns Supper event and will include performances from KT Tunstall, Dougie Maclean, Skerryvore and many more.

The 75-minute digital event, taking place on January 25, will see Godley present a varied line-up straight from her living room.

Dumfries-born Celtic cabaret Le Haggis will be bringing a specially curated set featuring acts from past and present, while comedian Ray Bradshaw and Jamaican World Roots Reggae singer Brina are among the other offerings.

The event will also feature a performance from pupils from primary schools across Scotland with a community sing-along of Auld Lang Syne.

Godley commented: "I am super excited to do this as it’s the first time I can do a Burns do in my bare feet beside a window.”

Musician KT Tunstall said that last year’s Big Burns Supper event was one of her favourite Burns experiences.

“The energy in the spiegeltent that night was totally electric and although for now we can’t party again in-person, I’m so looking forward to joining the digital celebrations in 2021 to help mark the festival’s 10th anniversary with a very special performance from yours truly just for the occasion.”

The landmark event normally takes place in Dumfries and features cabaret, comedy, music and entertainment in 30 venues across the town.

Director of events at Visit Scotland, Paul Bush, said the team is “delighted” the event is going ahead digitally through the coronavirus pandemic.

“The plans for their 10th anniversary virtual edition look set to offer a fantastic array of unique entertainment, artistic collaborations and renowned community spirit,” he said. “Burns night gathers Scots and Scots-at-heart around the world to pay tribute to the great poet’s life and works, so by adapting the event to be showcased digitally in 2021, the Big Burns Supper will continue to offer a place for many to celebrate our national bard.”
