Speaking in the Scottish Parliament Nicola Sturgeon announced that all 11 areas currently classed as level 4 will be moved to level 3 on Friday.

The First Minister explained: “I am pleased to say that prevalence in all 11 of those areas has fallen significantly.

“For example in the week to Friday November 13, Glasgow recorded 281 new Covid cases for every hundred thousand people in its population. By Friday December 4, that number had fallen to 150.

“In East Dunbartonshire, case numbers per 100,000 of the population have more than halved - from 224 to 104.

“And in both North and South Lanarkshire, case numbers have fallen by well over a third.

“The fall in infection rates in these areas - the most highly populated in the country - have contributed to an improvement in the situation across Scotland as a whole.”

The First Minister thanked people in the level 4 areas for their compliance. "All of this puts us in a much better position to cope with the inevitable difficulties of winter," she said.

Meanwhile three areas were moved from level 3-2 – Inverclyde, Falkirk and Angus.

And two level 2 areas, Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders, will be moved to level 1.

The First Minister went on: “The overall result of today’s changes is that 16 local authorities will move to a lower level of restrictions from Friday, and the rest will remain at the same level.

“This is good news. It reflects the fact that the number of cases in Scotland has been falling in recent weeks.”

It comes after the First Minister reacted to the first Covid-19 vaccinations taking place across Scotland this morning, describing it as a "milestone moment".

However Sturgeon warned despite the good news people should not drop their guard during this time.

"We have no grounds at all for complacency during the months ahead," the First Minister told viewers.
