NICOLA Sturgeon has reacted to the latest Scottish independence poll putting Yes in the lead on 56 per cent.

The survey from Ipsos MORI/STV was the 15th to find majority support for leaving the Union, and also put Holyrood constituency voting intention for the SNP at 55%.

With list support at 47% too, that would secure 73 MSPs for the party and give them a parliamentary majority.

The First Minister described the results as “great polling” for both independence and her party.

The study also found much higher levels of trust in the SNP than the other parties on several issues – including standing up for Scotland’s interest, responding to the Covid crisis, managing the NHS, tackling inequality, and managing the economy, education and schools.

Sturgeon said this data is the “key”.

“We’re trusted on issues that matter to people. So we must keep focused and never give people impression we’re more interested in talking to each other than to them.”

The Scottish Tories came out second in the survey with 22% of constituency and regional votes, while Scottish Labour were in third place with 14% and 16% respectively.

That would see the Tories winning 27 seats (three fewer than they currently have) and Labour taking 19 (a loss of four).

Both the Greens and the LibDems are on track to secure five MSPs each.

As well as putting Yes at 56% and No at 44%, the poll asked respondents to rank their certainty on their position.

They were told to rank themselves from complete support for the Union to complete support for independence on a scale of one to 10 – it found a quarter were between three and eight.
