A CITY centre building site has closed after mounting numbers of workers tested positive for coronavirus

BAM Construction made the decision to close the site of their Atlantic Square project in York Street after a number of workers had caught the deadly bug.

The Dutch construction giant paused work after the number of known cases exceeded 18 on Tuesday and a number of other employees were unable to attend work on Wednesday as they were either isolating or booking a test.

A source said there could be as many as 35 people who work on the site infected but BAM did not specify the total.

BAM said it has told both public health authorities and the Health and Safety Executive the site has closed and wished for a speedy recovery for the affected workers.

The closure will be reviewed on a weekly basis, said a spokesman for the firm.

He added: "Following another increase in positive Covid results among the workforce on our Atlantic Square project in Glasgow over the course of the last two days, we have now taken the decision to temporarily close the site.

"We have been working closely with Public Health Scotland since the first positive test last week and had already taken an extensive range of preventative measures in consultation with PHS to attempt to control the spread of infection, including an overnight full hygienic deep clean of the accommodation and site.

"In the light of current developments, we have notified both PHS and the Health and Safety Executive that we are taking the final proactive measure available to us to keep our workforce safe. Both organisations fully support our approach.

"In keeping with Covid protocols, we will review this decision on a weekly basis and only re-open the site when we consider it is safe to do so.

"We sincerely hope that anybody testing positive will recover fully from any symptoms they may be experiencing."
