THE SNP has announced it will be expanding its press team as we enter a “crucial time for Scotland”.

The party, which currently has 47 MPs, is looking for a press officer to work from London.

The job has been promoted by many SNP MPs and MSPs, with the party’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford calling it a “fantastic opportunity”.

Drew Hendry, the representative for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, added: “This is not only a great opportunity - the successful applicant will enjoy working with a terrific team - at a fascinating and fast-moving time in politics.”

The successful applicant will report to Tom French, the SNP’s director of communications at Westminster, and Fraser MacDonald, their senior press officer for broadcast, according to the job listing.

The posting comes after the fourteenth poll in succession to record majority support for Scottish independence.

Yesterday’s Panelbase poll had Yes on 56% after Don’t Knows were excluded. When Don’t Knows were included the Yes vote remained the majority position, with 51% of Scots supporting independence.

The SNP role, which will see the winning candidate asked to promote the party’s work through the media, also comes after reports Michael Gove is trying to hire his own team of Unionist “attack dogs” to fight the rising tide of support for independence.

Gove has reportedly hit a stumbling block in his plans however, as attempts to hire civil servants to fill “overtly political” roles were rebuffed by Whitehall staff.

It has been reported that, should Gove complete his team, two full-time members of staff will be tasked with countering SNP publicity.

Those wishing to apply for the SNP role must fill in the application form and email it to snpgroup@parliament.uk before Monday, December 7.
