BREATHTAKING pictures have been released revealing an adventure by four Scottish students and sport climbers as they tackle a new “super crag” outside Gairloch.

A BBC Scotland Adventure Show Special, fronted by Dougie Vipond, focuses on the development of the crag, which is in sight of Loch Maree and contains the longest and some of the hardest routes for sport climbing in Scotland.

The climbers – 18-year-olds Hannah Smith, from Muirhead, and Emma Davidson, from Livingston – both honed their skills on indoor walls, so going outside to this intimidating, overhanging lump of rock is a new experience.

They are joined by Calum Cunningham, 23, from Ullapool, and Rhys Langlands, 19, from Inverness, two of the best young climbers in the country.

Executive producer Richard Else, from Adventure Show Productions, Newtonmore, said: “What sport climbing gives us is a different sort of climber – a rock athlete who will often have trained on indoor climbing walls. On a topical note this type of climbing will be part of the next Olympics and one of our climbers, Hannah Smith, would like to be part of the GB team in 2028.

“Sport climbing was once very controversial in Scotland but in recent years it’s become an accepted part of the climbing scene.”

The BBC Scotland Adventure Show Special will be broadcast on November 13 at 8pm.
