The National:

SCOTTISH Tories are showing themselves up with their claim that Nicola Sturgeon is “raging against democracy”.

The First Minister responded to the Scottish Secretary’s claim that there will be no new independence vote for at least 25 years – despite 12 consecutive polls showing majority support for Yes.

Nicola Sturgeon told Alister Jack: “As we’re seeing across the Atlantic just now, politicians who rage against democracy don’t prevail. Let’s not dignify this rubbish. Instead let’s keep making and winning the case for independence. Power doesn’t belong to politicians - it belongs to the people.”

In response the Tories – the party that brought Brexit to a nation which voted against it by 62% and which Scotland has not backed in a General Election since the 1950s – claimed Sturgeon doesn’t respect democracy.

Annie Wells, a list Tory MSP for Glasgow, claimed: “Truly sad, yet predictable, rhetoric from the FM who seems more determined than ever to turn Scots against one another.

“She has ZERO respect for democracy in Scotland...just look at her government's response to the two crucial votes this week in Parliament...”

The MSP’s replies were full of Yes supporters reminding her of the principles of the Smith Commission, which all Holyrood parties signed and says nothing in it prevents Scotland from becoming an independent nation in the future.

“Heard it all now, a Tory speaking about democracy!” one person replied.

Another shared the latest poll showing support for independence on 54%, saying: “Does this appear to be the ‘settled will’ of the Scottish public Ms Wells? What do you have against democracy? This was yesterday.”

Another Twitter user referenced the Tories’ law-breaking Internal Market Bill, writing: “From the party that ignores international treaties. Actually no words.”

MSP Miles Briggs also joined in, telling the First Minister: “Perhaps if the SNP started to respect the will of the Scottish Parliament and Referendum results this would have more credibility.”

No. Self. Awareness.

Tories are set to fall into third place in the Holyrood election and they still can’t see that their debunked “once in a generation” nonsense is flawed and doing nothing for them.

Support for independence is the majority position. It’s time they get used to it.
