WITH the coronavirus pandemic continuing, the Yes movement has been severely affected in the ways in which we can campaign for independence.
We have been able to report on a plethora of online events and developments that have kept Yes groups going over the past few months, and today we bring you news of one that had been launched within the last weeks and is already proving popular.
The Indy Mic Podcast was launched in mid-October with the support of the Aberdeen Independence Movement.
Co-hosts of the show are Theo Forbes and Josh Aaron-Mennie, who told The National’s Yes DIY page how the idea behind it is to create engaging discussions around independence in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Aaron-Mennie, the national convener of the Out For Indy group, said: “From the podcasts already recorded we have created a relaxed and conversational approach when talking about independence. We have incredible names from the movement lined up to be on our show and the months ahead are shaping up to be really exciting”.

Forbes added: “As a young person in politics, I have witnessed firsthand the need for a different approach to appealing to folk who are yet to be convinced on independence. The Indy Mic Podcast does just that. It is about having fun while getting the message across that Scotland can and will be a successful independent country”.
The Indy Mic Podcast features on a range of platforms where listeners can tune in to listen – Spotify, Breaker, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts and Radio Public.
The show launched its first episode as a feature-length edition with prominent, pro-independence journalist Michael Gray. The second episode featured Suzanne McLaughlin, founder of the Yes Bar and a contender for Holyrood, where she discusses her journey into politics and the idea behind establishing a pro-independence business in Scotland.
In the coming months, the Indy Mic Podcast has massive figures in the independence movement lined up to be on its show, including co-convener of the Scottish Green Party Patrick Harvie MSP, and Gillian Martin MSP, who was a founding member of the Quines for Independence in the North East in 2014.
The third show, due out shortly, is guaranteed to be a hit because it features Michael Stewart, one of the country’s best known football pundits who is never scared to advance his opinions.
He is also a huge supporter of independence, and his appearance on the Indy Mic Podcast will be well worth listening to as he has very pronounced opinions on the way forward for the cause.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
