SCOTLAND has recorded a further 24 coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours, Scottish Government data shows.

The daily figures revealed that the number of people to die after receiving a positive test for Covid-19 in the last 28 days, since the start of the pandemic, now stands at 2843.

Over the last day another 1101 people also tested positive for the virus.

Of the new cases there were 374 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 317 in Lanarkshire, 121 in Lothian and 84 in Ayrshire and Arran.

As of midnight there were 1149 people in hospital with the virus, a decrease of 21 on the previous day.

There were also 80 people in intensive care units across the country, three fewer than the day prior.

It comes as Boris Johnson prepares to update England on national lockdown restrictions which could be brought in as soon as next week.

Coronavirus cases south of the Border are increasing faster than the worst-case scenario had predicted.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said any decision made on new Scotland-wide restrictions would be introduced based on our data, not England’s.

At present it seems the rate of increase in Scotland has slowed after restrictions on hospitality and household gatherings were introduced.
