I AM surprised that the myth that young people are safe from Covid 19 continues despite much evidence to the contrary.
Back in March it was already recognised that in the USA 40% of people who were hospitalised with the virus were under 54 years of age.
That was when most people were taking the recommended precautions. Now though, large numbers of people both here and in the USA are challenging and ignoring the precautions. This is resulting in people being infected by a much greater viral load.

In the USA it was reported last week that more younger people are being admitted to hospital.
The report states that of patients admitted to hospital aged 18 to 34, some 21% required to be treated in intensive care. 10% needed to be put on ventilators. 2.7% died.
On top of this an increasing number of young people go on to suffer long-term effects of the virus (Long Covid).
The message is that nobody is safe from this awful virus.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
