The Great British Bake Off (C4, 8pm)
BACK in April, TV viewers followed Paul Hollywood as he headed on a culinary and cultural road trip across the Land of the Rising Sun, for his Channel 4 series Paul Hollywood Eats Japan. Tonight, the judge puts his experiences to good use in Bake Off’s first-ever Japanese week. For the signature, the contestants tackle a Japanese version of the Asian staple, steamed buns. That’s followed by a tricky layered technical, and finally a showstopper inspired by Kawaii, the Japanese love of all things cute, loveable and adorable.
Autumnwatch (BBC2, 8pm)
CHRIS Packham was apparently heartbroken when Michaela Strachan could only make guest appearances from South Africa on this year’s Springwatch. However, she is back for Autumnwatch and will be based at Tentsmuir Forest in Fife, where she will be covering, among other things, a live camera set-up on the Isle of May as the grey seals haul out for pupping. While Chris stays close to his home in the New Forest, Gillian Burke is at RSPB Old Moor in South Yorkshire.
Life (BBC1, 9pm)
THE penultimate episode of the Doctor Foster spin-off sees the neighbours remain trapped in situations of their own making. Can any of them escape and find true happiness? While Gail has a new style and a new outlook on life, Belle’s sister Ruth moves in, bringing even more chaos than Maya. David finally realises Belle may hold the key to the answers he seeks and at Hannah’s hen party, the bride-to-be tries to find out where Andy’s heart really lies.
Play for Today: Just A Boy’s Game (BBC4, 10pm)
ORIGINALLY broadcast in 1979, this gritty tale of life in depressed Greenock has since been hailed as a cult classic. Jake McQuillan (Frankie Millar) drifts from bar to bar confident in the fact he can handle himself. Flanked by his promiscuous, good-time friend Dancer Dunnichy (Ken Hutchinson), Jake is talked into taking a day off from his work atop a crane in Glasgow docks. Jake’s cantankerous grandfather (Hector Nicol) is a sick man and resentful of Jake. Despite this, Jake seeks respect from his grandfather, but his quest to cement his reputation will end in tragedy.
