THE Scottish Building Society SWPL has announced that there will be no relegation from the top flight this season - while plans are in place to expand the league for the 2021/22 campaign.
Eight sides currently make up the top tier of women's football in Scotland but under the new arrangement, both divisions would feature 10 clubs.
The top two teams from the SWPL2 will be promoted at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, with no sides being relegated to the second division.
The 2020 SWPL season was scrapped back in March after just one round of fixtures had been fulfilled, with the new league campaign scheduled to kick-off this weekend and conclude in May 2021 after bosses decided to revert to a winter calendar.
Current champions Glasgow City, who won the title in 2019 in the last full season, will be playing their home games at Clyde's Broadwood Stadium after Petershill Park was ruled to be unavailable.
All eyes will be on the Old Firm clubs this season after both sides went professional in the hope of breaking City's monopoly on the women's game in Scotland, with Scott Booth's side aiming for a fourteenth consecutive league title.
Glasgow City and Celtic will meet on the opening day of the new season this Sunday while runners-up Hibernian host city rivals Spartans.
Newly-promoted Hearts will face Rangers away from home, and Motherwell face a trip to Forfar Farmington.
