ANOTHER 961 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Scotland, the First Minister has announced.

The new cases represent 17.1% of newly tested individuals and bring the total to 39,959.

No further deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, though registration offices are generally closed on Sundays.

Some 487 people were in hospital yesterday with confirmed coronavirus yesterday, 38 more than 24 hours previously.

Of those, 36 were in intensive care, an increase of one.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde saw the biggest rise in cases, with 359. Next was Lanarkshire with 244, then Lothian with 112 and Ayrshrie and Arran with 88.

The remaining cases are spread across eight other health board areas. The only health boards without fresh cases were Orkney and Shetland.

Speaking at the Scottish Government's briefing, Nicola Sturgeon said: "It's important to stress, in light of, particularly, the hospital number that I've just given you there, that rising hospital admissions was a factor in our decision to take action and bring in temporary restrictions last week."

She added: "I want again to send my thoughts to everybody who has lost a loved one, and in particular, to those who have been bereaved in recent days."
